Electric Motor Bearing Grease: How Much and How Often
By the PCG Technical Desk · Updated 27 September 2026
Quick answer: A widely used regreasing quantity is G = 0.005 × D × B, where G is grease in grams, D is the bearing outside diameter in mm and B is the bearing width in mm. Use the grease the motor OEM specifies, commonly NLGI 2 or 3. Over-greasing is a leading cause of hot motor bearings.
Worked example
A 6310 bearing (D = 110 mm, B = 27 mm): G = 0.005 × 110 × 27 ≈ 15 g per regreasing. Weigh your grease gun's output (grams per stroke) so you can apply the right amount.
How often?
The interval depends on speed, bearing size, temperature and contamination. Bearing manufacturers publish charts. Higher speeds and temperatures need shorter intervals. If the OEM plate gives an interval, follow it.
Good practice
- Clean the grease nipple, and open the drain plug while greasing, if one is fitted.
- Grease with the motor running if safe, then run with the drain open so excess can escape.
- Don't mix incompatible greases. Purge fully when changing type.
- Record grams applied and the date.
Greases: Servogem EP 2 for shock-loaded bearings. IOCL also lists Servogem 2/3 multipurpose grades. Temperature duty: Servogem Super HT.

FAQs
For regreasing, use G (grams) = 0.005 × outside diameter (mm) × width (mm), unless the OEM gives a quantity.
