Picking the right grease
Match the thickener to the duty: lithium for general bearings, complex greases for high temperature, calcium-sulphonate or lithium-calcium for water wash. Match the consistency (NLGI grade) to the application method: NLGI 2 for most bearings, softer grades for centralised systems. Check the base-oil viscosity for slow, heavily loaded bearings. Avoid mixing incompatible thickeners. Over-greasing is a common cause of hot, failed motor bearings (see the motor bearing greasing guide and the NLGI grades guide).

Kiln and cement-mill girth gears use adhesive, sprayable open-gear lubricants rather than bearing grease. IOCL lists Servogrease CG 10/20/50 and Servogrease RN (running-in) and 300 (priming) for rotary kilns, cement and ball mills. Servocoat compounds are listed for kiln tyres.
