How to choose a hydraulic oil
Start with the pump or machine manual. It gives the viscosity (ISO VG 32, 46 or 68) and sometimes a performance class such as DIN 51524-2 HLP or a Denison approval. Most Indian machine shops use VG 46. Presses and moulding machines in hot sheds often use VG 68. Match the class as well as the viscosity. A DIN 51524-2 machine should get Servosystem HLP, not a general anti-wear oil. Mobile equipment working across a wide temperature range benefits from high-VI grades (HVLP or Servohydrex).
Keeping hydraulic oil clean
Most hydraulic failures start with contamination: water, dust or mixed oils. Store drums under cover, use dedicated transfer containers and fit desiccant breathers on critical tanks. Test the oil before deciding on a change (see the hydraulic oil change interval guide).
