DIN 51517 CLP Meaning: Industrial Gear Oil Classes
By the PCG Technical Desk · Updated 27 September 2026
Quick answer: DIN 51517 covers lubricating oils for gears and bearings. Part 1 = C (no additives), Part 2 = CL (with corrosion and oxidation inhibitors) and Part 3 = CLP (CL plus EP/anti-wear additives). Gearbox makers frequently specify “CLP 220” — an ISO VG 220 oil meeting DIN 51517 Part 3.
What CLP requires
DIN 51517-3 sets limits for viscosity, oxidation, corrosion, foaming, demulsibility and seal compatibility, and requires load-carrying performance in the FZG gear test and bearing wear tests.
