LUBRICATION GUIDE
Lubricant Storage Best Practices for Plants
By the PCG Technical Desk · Updated 27 September 2026
Quick answer: Store lubricants indoors, dry and away from dust. Use first-in-first-out stock rotation. If drums must be outdoors, lay them on their side with bungs at 3 and 9 o'clock, or cover them. Label every container, and use dedicated, clean transfer equipment for each oil.
Why storage matters
Water and dust enter through drum bungs as drums ‘breathe’ with day–night temperature changes. Contaminated new oil shortens the life of every machine it goes into.
Checklist
- Covered, dry, ventilated store with spill containment.
- Drums horizontal on racks (bungs at 3 and 9 o'clock) or covered if upright.
- FIFO rotation. Note the receiving date on each drum.
- Colour-coded labels and dedicated containers and pumps for each oil type.
- Filter oil when transferring to critical systems. Fit desiccant breathers on critical tanks.
- Keep grease guns labelled per grease type.
